A filling is a method of restoring the function and shape of a decayed tooth. A dentist applies a filling by first removing the decayed tooth material, cleaning the affected area, and then fill the cleaned-out cavity with a filling material. By closing off spaces where bacteria can enter, a filling prevents further decay. Gold, porcelain, composite resin (tooth-colored fillings), and amalgam are all filling materials (an alloy of mercury, silver, copper, tin, and sometimes zinc). Only your dentist will be able to tell you if you have a cavity that needs to be filled. During a checkup, your dentist will examine the surfaces of each tooth with a small mirror. Anything that appears abnormal will then be thoroughly examined using specialized instruments. Your dentist may also perform an X-ray of your entire mouth or a portion of it. The type of treatment your dentist recommends will be determined by the extent of decay damage.
