For a variety of reasons, a dentist or orthodontist may decide to extract a tooth. Even with root canal therapy, the tooth may be so badly damaged from either decay that it cannot be saved. Crowding or malocclusion (bad bite) may also result, in preventing a new tooth from emerging. A loose tooth could also be the result of gum disease or an accident. In the simple procedure of tooth extraction, a dentist holds the tooth with forceps and moves it back and forth to loosen it from the bone. The overlying gum may need to be removed if a tooth is not completely through the gum. A blood clot forms in the space where the tooth once was after it is extracted. The clot does not need to be removed because it aids in healing. A dry socket is a painful condition that does not heal on its own if the clot is disrupted. There may be some light bleeding and swelling over the next 24 hours.
