When bacteria have compromised the healthy part of the tooth, a dental filling is used to restore the tooth's function. To restore the tooth, your dentist will remove the decayed portion of the tooth and fill the hole. Each tooth has five surfaces, and your dentist will determine which ones require restoration. The extent to which the decay has spread determines how much of the tooth is compromised; a filling can also be used to repair broken or cracked teeth. During the dental filling procedure, our dentist will first use a local anesthetic to numb the area around your tooth. This procedure ensures that you are not in any pain during the procedure. To stop the process, your dentist will isolate the tooth being filled and use a drill to remove the decayed part of the tooth and any remaining bacteria. After the extraction, your dentist will fill the hole with either an amalgam (silver filling) or a composite (resin/white) filling.
