A dentist or orthodontist may decide to extract a tooth for a variety of reasons. The tooth may be so badly damaged from either decay that it cannot be saved even with root canal therapy. It may also cause crowding or malocclusion (bad bite), which prevents a new tooth from emerging. Alternatively, a loose tooth could be the result of gum disease or an accident. A dentist holds the tooth with forceps and moves it back and forth to loosen it from the bone in the simple procedure of tooth extraction. If a tooth is not completely through the gum, the overlying gum may need to be removed. Following tooth extraction, a blood clot forms in the space where the tooth once was. It is not necessary to remove the clot because it aids in healing. Disrupting the clot can result in a dry socket, a painful condition that does not heal on its own. Over the next 24 hours, there may be some light bleeding and swelling.
